Many countries around the world are introducing smart construction that improves productivity through automation, informatization, and quality improvement of construction projects. As a key point, a 3D construction information model combining 3D topographic data and design data is required. In this study, the 3D Building information modeling is defined as the most suitable 3D design data for Korea through the current diagnosis of architectural information models mainly used in the design stage. Additionally, the working stages of a 3D construction information model are categorized, and the technology, equipment, and data currently applicable are analyzed in a step by step method, whereas the design stages are also defined. Since the current 3D construction information model is not clearly defined, the method proposed in this study is expected to contribute to the development of questions and related technologies in the actual application process.
