A Study on the characteristics of the art spaces of the Oil Tank Culture Park developed for cultural urban regeneration

Abstract

In this study, we examined the Oil Tank Culture Park developed for cultural urban regeneration and analyzed the characteristics of the art spaces based on the artistic activities of each artist. Our analysis focused on the Tank 1 (T1), Tank 2 (T2), and Tank 4 (T4) areas of the Oil Tank Culture Park, which serve as primary hubs for artistic activities, rather than the entirety of the park. Moreover, we investigated the current status of the artistic activities performed in this complex by focusing on external performances based on venue rental. The characteristics of the art spaces of the Oil Tank Culture Park based on the analytic results are as follows. First, visual elements of these spaces, such as visible historical and cultural features, synergistically contribute to enhancing the power of artistic expression. Second, these spaces function as complex areas, each of which can be adjusted or dismantled for different purposes and forms. Third, these spaces represent regeneration based on the transformation of past structures into modern artworks. Furthermore, we reviewed artistic programs operated by the Oil Tank Culture Park to analyze the unique characteristics of its art spaces created by the artworks placed in them. The analytic results are as follows. First, these spaces amplify the power of artistic expression based on visual elements. Second, these spaces accentuate spatial complexity. Third, these spaces prominently showcase regenerative value.
