Urban heritage redevelopment model within historic centre of Hilla, Iraq

Abstract

When renewing architectural heritage, balance between socio-cultural and socio-economic values should be ensured. Understanding the cultural and historical importance of these urban landscapes is crucial in preserving their unique characteristics while accommodating modern necessities. Developing an adaptable model that considers social, economic and environmental factors can facilitate a balanced approach to urban revitalization. This study aims to create a model for sustainable urban redevelopment that is heritage-driven. This will not only contribute to the revitalization of historic districts, but also help to preserve their cultural heritage and traditional character for future generations. Through an integration of data analysis and expert opinions, it hopes to propose effective model for the adaptive rehabilitation of historic structures within a context of sustainability and community engagement. An old section of Hilla, Iraq, is used as a case study and each indicator was evaluated against it. This study will clear the way for more rigorous and successful conservation and redevelopment that prioritize sustainability foremost. Moreover, this study adapts a model for sustainable urban heritage redevelopment from a heritage-driven urban renewal to a build a model in Hilla, city, Iraq literature, providing a foundation for location-specific frameworks for sustainable redevelopment.
